THE EFFECT OF SEMANTIC FEATURE ANALYSIS ON STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT AT THE SECOND GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 14 KENDARI
Vocabulary becomes the main problem that encountered by the students in SMP Negeri 14 Kendari. Less motivation and interest are factors that affect students in learning vocabulary. The research question of this study was “Is there any significant effect of semantic feature analysis on students’ vocabulary achievement at the second grade students of SMP Negeri 14 Kendari?” The objective of this study was to find out whether semantic feature analysis has an effect on students’ vocabulary achievement at the second grade students of SMP Negeri 14 Kendari. The population of this study was all students at second grade of SMP Negeri 14 Kendari who registered on second semester in academic year 2017/2018 with the total number of students’ were 205 students. The samples of this study were all students at class VIII.2 with total number of students are 30 and it taken by using simple random sampling. The instrument of this study was vocabulary test which consisted of 25 items (5 items matching with the synonym, 10 items matching with the meaning, 5 items complete the sentences and 5 items fill in the blank test). They were administered into two groups as the pre test and post test. The researcher used Paired Sample T-test in SPSS 16 to analyze the result of the research whether there is a significant effect of semantic feature analysis on students’ vocabulary achievement after analyzed the normality of the data in experiment class. Based on the analysis result of pre-test and post-test through SPSS in form of test, it found that the probability (Sig. 1-tailed) was 0.000 (ρ < 0.05) and the calculation of tcount (10.070) was higher than ttable (1.699) in the level of significance 0.05, df = 29. It indicated that null hypothesis (H0) was totally rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was completely accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is enough evidence to claim that semantic feature analysis strategy has significant effect on students’ vocabulary achievement at the second grade students of SMP Negeri 14 Kendari.Keyword: Vocabulary, Semantic Feature Analysis

The background of conducting this research is the need to find out a method of teaching vocabulary that can be integrated into the four main skills, while focused still on students’ vocabulary. The objective of the research is to find out whether there is a significant effect of ostensive approach on students’ vocabulary at the first grade of SMP Negeri 10 Kendari. This research is focused on the effect of ostensive approach based on students’ vocabulary achievement. The design of the study was Quasi experimental design which two group in given pretest and posttest. The instrument of this study was vocabulary test that consisted of 40 numbers and multiple- choice test consists of 20 items and there are 20 items of matching test. The population of this study was all the first grade students’ of SMP Negeri 10 Kendari who were registered in academic year 2015/2016 with the total number of students is 223. The researcher chooses class VII5 as experimental class and VII6 as control class and both of class consist of 30 students. The researcher collected the data by giving pretest in two classes to know students’ prior knowledge, giving treatment which the researcher conducted teaching and learning process by using ostensive approach in experimental class and using traditional approach in control class, then giving posttest to know the differences effect of the two approach toward the improving of students’ vocabulary achievement after treatment. The data collected analyzed by using SPSS 16 for windows in form independent-sample t test and the result of the analysis shows that there were significant differences between students who taught by ostensive approach and students who taught by traditional approach. Its’ proved by the result, the hypothesis testing show the value of probability (sig. 2 tailed) 0.004 lower than alpha value (0.05). It means that Ho was rejected and H1 totally accepted. Therefore, mean score experiment class was higher than control class (79.5000 > 69.4667). The mean score of experiment class was included in high criteria whereas the mean score of control class was included in moderate criteria. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using ostensive approach on improving students’ vocabulary achievement at the first grade of SMPN 10 Kendari. This paper entitled “A Study on the Students’ Understanding in Guessing Synonym Word of the Eighth Grade Students at SMP Negeri 2 Mandau”. The research is a descriptive research, intended to know students understanding in guessing synonym word of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Mandau. The subject of this research is the eighth grade student of SMP Negeri 2 Mandau. The object of this research is the students understanding in guessing synonym word. The population of this research is the eighth grade student of SMP Negeri 2 Mandau. There is eight class of population. Total numbers of students are 320.The researcher uses the Simple Random Sampling. From eighth classes, the researcher takes two random classes as sample. The sample is class VIII.1 and VIII.2. Total of the sample is 80 students. The result of this research showed that students understanding in guessing synonym word of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Mandau falls to good level. This can be seen on the results of the test conducted by the researcher. The researcher got the total score of the whole students is 5600. So, the average score of the students is 70. Based on the score above, students understanding in guessing synonym word of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Mandau falls to good level.

The present study is aimed to find out whether there is a significant difference of students’ vocabulary achievement between students who are taught by using mind mapping technique with students team achievement divison and original mind mapping technique, and whether there is an increase in the students' interest of English vocabulary learning through mind mapping technique with students team achievement divison. The subjects of this research were the tenth grade students of SMK Aku Cinta Indonesia Metro. This study is quantitative research. The data were obtained from the pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire. The data were analyzed by using Independent group t-test and Paired sample t-test in SPSS (Statistical Program for Social Science). The results show that the students' vocabulary achievement in experimental class increased from 54.07 to 81.87 and there is a significant difference with the sig. (2 tailed) of 0.00 < 0.05. The result of students' vocabulary achievement in control class also increased from 53.40 to 68.73 and there is a significant difference with the sig. (2 tailed) of 0.01 < 0.05. Meanwhile, the result of the significance value of the experimental class and the control class are 0.00 < α = 0.05. It means that the p value is less than 0.05. This indicates that there is a significant difference in students' vocabulary achievement between the students who were taught using mind mapping technique with students team achievement divison and original mind mapping technique. Furthermore, the results show that students' interest increased from 30.07 to 42.30 with a significance value of 0.00 < α = 0.05. It can be concluded that H1 is accepted which states that there is an increase in students' interest in learning vocabulary using mind mapping technique with students team achievement divison. In conclusion, learning using digital mind mapping technique has a greater influence on students' vocabulary achievement and it is also able to increase students' interest in English vocabulary.

Abstract: This study was aimed to find out whether or not think-pair-share strategy: (a) improved eighth graders` vocabulary achievement, (b) improved eighth graders` reading comprehension achievement, (c) made a difference in the vocabulary and reading comprehension achievements between the experimental group students (those who were taught by using think-pair-share strategy) and those of the control group students (who were not). In conducting the study, think-pair-share strategy was applied in the experimental group, but the control group did not get any treatment. Seventy students were assigned in two groups, with 35 students in the experimental group and the other 35 students in the control group. To collect the data, vocabulary and reading comprehension tests were used. The collected data were analyzed by using paired samples t-test and independent samples t-test. The findings of the study showed that there were (a) an improvement in eighth graders` vocabulary achievement, (b) an improvement in eighth graders` reading comprehension achievement, and (c) a significant difference in vocabulary and reading comprehension achievements between the students who were taught by using think-pair-share strategy and those who were not. Therefore, think-pair-share strategy seems effective for the teaching reading as well as vocabulary. This research presented the the effects of Demonstration Method in teaching writing at the Second Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Baula. The question of this research was “Is there any significant effects of using the Demonstration method in teaching writing at the second-grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Baula?” The objective of the research is to figure out whether there is any significant effect of demonstration method on students writing at the second grade of students in SMP Negeri 1 Baula or not. The design of this research is a quasi- experiment by using an experimental and control group with pre-test and post-test design. The variable of this research consisted of two variables, the Demonstration method as the independent variable and the students’ writing ability as the dependent variable. The samples are 41 students and it is taken by purposive sampling technique. The instrument of this research is a writing test. The treatment of this research is done in four meetings. Based on the result of the research, it found that the experimental class's mean is bigger (60,0) than the control class was (56,6). The result showed that T-test > Ttable (10.52>1.68). The alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It could be concluded that there is a significant effect of the Demonstration Method in Teaching Writing at the Second Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Baula

The aim of the study was to examine the effectiveness of eclectic method to improve students’ writing skill at the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Keruak, focusing on (1) Is eclectic method effective in writing skill at the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Keruak in the academic year 2016-2017? and (2) How is the effectiveness of the eclectic method to improve students’ writing skill at the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Keruak in the academic year 2016-2017?. The design of this research was a pre-experimental pre-test and post-test research. It means this research only applied the eclectic method to the experimental group that consisted of 36 students. The sample of the study was taken by using cluster random sampling technique. In gaining pre-test and post-test data, the students required to do the individual task in writing the monolog text of recount based on the material that was learnt before. Then the pretest and post-test data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics and Paired Sample t-test to test the hypothesis. Having collected and calculated the data by using descriptive statistics, it was found out that descriptive statistic results showed that the mean score of the pre-test was 7.21 while the mean of the post-test was 9.25. The result of hypothesis testing by using Paired-Sample t-test was t(27) = 11.68 at p = .000. It was lower than .05 so it means that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. In other word that the use of eclectic method was significantly effective in writing skill to the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Keruak in the academic year 2016-2017.

The present study dealt with An Analysis of Grammatical Errors bythe eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kuta Utara in academic year 2016/ 2017. The researcher interested in analyzing kinds of errors because the errors were made by students should be corrected so not to become fossilized. The total amount of population which consisted of 12 classes were 384 students all together. The amount of population was determined by using quota random sampling technique. The number of representative students which used as subjet under study was 40 students. The present study which made use of an ex-post facto research design was intended to answer the following research questions: what kind of grammatical errors which is made by the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kuta Utara in academic year 2016/ 2017 in constructing direct and indirect speech. The data required for the study were collected by using grammatical transformation tasks. In the grammatical transformation tasks, the students were asked to change direct speech to indirect speech or vice versa by the correct grammatical forms in the sentences. The result revealed that there were 303 errors made by the students. From the total number of students’ errors, the researcher found that there were four types of errors. There were 43(14,19%)of omission error, there were 29(9,57%)of addition errors, there were 58(19,14%)of malformation errors, and there were 173(57,09%)of disordering errors. The finding of present study was many students who weredifficultto answerdirect and indirect speech. They lacked of knowledge and inability in mastering English grammar so many mistakes were made by them.

In learning vocabulary, many media are used. One of the media that can be used is the use of Word Wall. The study aimed to find out the impact of using Word Wall in teaching vocabulary on the students’ vocabulary achievement. The researcher used a quasi-experimental approach with a quantitative approach in this research, which aimed to find out the impact of using Word Wall in teaching vocabulary on the students’ vocabulary achievement. The population was tenth-grade students of a Public Senior High School in West Surabaya and 66 students as research samples taken by cluster random sampling. The results of the calculations showed the impact of using Word Wall in teaching vocabulary on the students’ vocabulary achievement. Researcher measured its effectiveness by using t-test and t-table calculations which showed the t-test result was higher than t-table which was 2,51 > 1,99773. From the increase in scores in the experimental class before the treatment by using Word Wall (Mean = 72,12) and after the treatment (Mean = 90,73). Also from the difference in results between the experimental and admin classes. Furthermore, from the resulting effects, it can be concluded that the language barrier is working in grade 10 public high schools in West Surabaya.

This study is conducted to investigate whether there was a significant effect of English comics on students‟ vocabulary achievement. The research question of this study was “is there any significant effect of English comics on students‟ vocabulary achievement at SMPN 10 Kendari?” The design of this study was quasi experimental design that consists of experimental class and control class. The sample of this study are students at class VIII 3 and VIII 4 in SMP Negeri 10 Kendari who register in academic year 2016/2017 with the total number of sample are 56 students, 27 for control class and 29 for experimental class. The instrument of this study is a vocabulary test. The researcher collects the data by giving pre test in two classes to know students ability, giving treatment which the researcher conducted teaching and learning process by using English comics in experimental class and using no media (conventional teaching method) in control class, giving post test to know students‟ vocabulary achievement after being taught by using comics compared with the result in class that taught by conventional teaching media. The researcher used an Independent sample T-test in SPSS verse 20 to analyze the result of the research. An independent sample t-test was conducted to compare the gain scores in experimental and control class. There was a significant difference in the scores for experimental class (M= 2.02, SD= 2.03) and control class (M= 0.94, SD= 1.32) conditions; p= 0.02 Sig. <α or H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. Thus, it can be said that using English comics has increased the students‟ vocabulary achievement. The objective of this research was to prove whether or not the use of authentic materials improves reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Palu. This research used quasi-experimental research design, involving an experimental group and a control group. The population of the research was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Palu. The sample was taken by applying purposive sampling technique. The sample was 27 students of VIII B as control group and 27 students of VIII D as the experimental group. The instrument in collecting data was test (pretest and posttest). In this research, authentic materials is original materials in the form of printed materials, which can be found in everyday life with a clear context. The data in this research were analyzed statistically with a significance level of 0.05 and degree of freedom (df) = 52, the results showed that value is 8.47 which is greater than 2.0126, which indicated that the null hypothesis ( ) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis ) is accepted. This research was intended to reveal that: can mnemonic technique increase vocabulary mastery of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Suppa Pinrang significantly. This research used Quasi Experimental method, with two class pre-test and post-test design. The population was the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Suppa Pinrang. The samples were drawn by using nonequivalent group design that consisted of 40 students which were class VIII, A as experimental class, VIII, C as the control class. The data were acquired by using vocabulary test. The vocabulary mastery test was applied in the pre-test and post-test. The data required from reading test was analyzed by using t-test and percentage technique. The result of the data analyzed shows that mnemonic technique can increase vocabulary mastery of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Suppa Pinrang significantly. It was proved by the mean score of the pre-test was (38.94) and the post-test was (82.10). It showed that used of mnemonic technique can increase vocabulary mastery of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Suppa Pinrang significantly. After analyzing the data by the t-test formula, the result of t-test value in post-test was (4.83) and t-table value was (2.024). Those indicated that H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected. The students who were taught through mnemonic technique were better than the students who were taught words list technique.

This research is aimed to find out the influence of picture strip story towards student’s speaking skill at the second grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Cisoka Kab. Tangerang. The purposes of the research are: 1) to identify students’ speaking skill at the second grade student in SMP Negeri 1 Cisoka; 2) to define the appropriate technique to influence students’ speaking skill at SMP Negeri 1 Cisoka; and 3) to identify the effectiveness of picture strip story on students’ speaking skill at the second grade students in SMP Negeri 1 Cisoka. This research used a quantitative method with quasi experiment design, with 73 students as samples and divided into two classes, namely the control class and the experiment class. The results show the mean of posttest the experiment class is higher than control class 63, 3. Based on the statistical calculation the value of t_o (5, 77), and df (71) in significance 5% (t_table= 2, 38) and significance 1% (t_table = 1, 66). From comparing the t_o and t_table the result is t_o &gt; t_table= 5, 77 &gt; 1, 66 and to &gt; t_table= 5, 77 &gt; 2, 38. It means that t_observation (t_o) is higher than t_table (t_t), so Null Hypothesis (H_o) is rejected and Alternative Hypothesis (H_a) is accepted. It can be concluded that picture story can influence students’ speaking skills by improving several aspects including students’ fluency, vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and comprehension.<p> </p>

This research based on the students’ problem related to English teaching especially in students’ writing ability. It was caused by the teaching media of the teacher in classroom was not interesting for students. It was also caused by several factors such as the students still take a lot of time to write because they do not know what they will written on their paper. In addition, writing is difficult lesson because in writing, we not only share our ideas from our mind but also we have to choose and combine the vocabulary well to make a writing that is meaningful. And one of the writing texts that have to be learnt in SMP is narrative text. Therefore, the objective of the research was to find out whether there is an improvement students’ narrative writing ability after being taught through animation film. This research applied quasi-experimental design with two groups namely experimental and control class. The population of this research was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Pinrang academic year 2017/2018. The sample of this research consisted of 28 students from two classes taken from the population of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Pinrang by using purposive sampling technique. The result of the data analysis showed that the students’ narrative writing ability improved. It showed by mean score of pre-test was 41.00 and post-test was 72.21. it showed that the writing ability of the eighth grade student of SMP Negeri 5 Pinrang improved by using animation film. After analyzing the data by using SPSS version 20, the result of probability value in post-test was 0.00 and significance value was 0.05. It means that that the probability value (0.00) was lower than significance value (0.05). Those indicated that H 0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. It means that the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Pinrang for experimental class was significantly different. In conclusion, teaching writing by using animation film was effective to improve the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Pinrang of academic year 2017/2018.

Vocabulary is the main foundation in communicating or interacting with other people in oral or written form. This classroom action research aimed to improve the eighth-grade students’ vocabulary achievement and their active participation at SMPN 1 Asembagus by using Tic-Tac-Toe game. The data were collected by using observation, a vocabulary achievement test, interview, and documentation. The collected data were analyzed quantitatively by using percentage formula. The result of observation showed that there was an improvement on the students’ active participation from 42% in the pre-cycle to 70% in Cycle 1. The vocabulary achievement test showed that there was an improvement on the students’ vocabulary achievement that was 35% in the pre-cyle to 67% of 31 students in Cycle 1 who got score ≥70 in vocabulary test. In conclusion, the use of Tic-Tac- Toe game in vocabulary learning can improve the students’ vocabulary achievement and their active participation.

This study discussed the applications of YouTube and TikTok to students’ vocabulary achievement. It was aimed to describe the students' vocabulary achievements when taught using the YouTube application, to elaborate on the student's vocabulary achievements when they are taught using the TikTok application, and to discover the differences in the effect of implementing the YouTube and TikTok applications on the students’ vocabulary achievement. This research used experimental research with a quantitative approach. Eighty students were taken as the sample. They were divided into 40 students for the experimental 1 group and 40 students for the experimental 2 group. The data was collected from observation, interviews, and vocabulary tests. Based on the results, it was found that YouTube applications significantly affect the students’ vocabulary achievement. It showed an improvement of about 35 % in the experimental 1 pretest group; the students who passed the KKM were nine stuents (22.5%). In experiment 1 post-test group, there was an improvement in students’ scores, where 23 students, or 57.5%, passed KKM. This means that YouTube application affects 35% of students' vocabulary achievement. On the other hand, the TikTok application also significantly affects the students’ vocabulary achievement. In the pretest results, only four students (10%) who passed the KKM. However, in the posttest results, the students got around 90% improvements. In other words, based on the posttest results in the experimental 2 group, all students passed the KKM (100%). Thus, based on the hypothesis calculation, it can be concluded that TikTok significantly affects students’ vocabulary achievement. It is proven from tcalculating t table or 2.469 1.683/. It means that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted.
