Abstract
By studying the behaviour of (Y-123) pellets coated with (0412) the effect of Pt additions on various stages of (211) development can be discerned. It is observed that the 0412 compound is readily dissolved in the peritectic melt. Pt in solution promotes nucleation of 211 by decreasing the critical nucleus radius. Pt also reduces the 211 coarsening rate by decreasing the 211/liquid interfacial energy.
