Abstract

Summary This study examined differences in the oviposition times of pure layers and broilers and their crossbreeds as well as the effects of oviposition time on hatching traits, chick hatching weight and chick weight at 6 weeks. Oviposition time had a significant effect on chick hatching weight; however, the effect on fertility, hatchability and chick weight at 6 weeks was insignificant. In all genotypes, the majority of eggs were laid in the morning. Overall, 96.1% of eggs collected in the morning and 94.7% of those collected in the afternoon were laid in nest boxes. Eggs laid in the morning were heavier than those laid in the afternoon. During the first two laying periods, the hatching egg ratio was higher for eggs collected in the afternoon.
