Abstract

This paper attempts to examine whether globalization can enhance women’s rights. We use a panel data from 17 Middle East North Africa ( MENA) countries over the period 1985-2009. We find that globalization positively influences women’s rights: it has a direct effect on women’s economic rights and an indirect effect on women’s social and economic rights after controlling for institutional factors. Our results are similar by using ordered logit and generalized-method-of-moments GMM-system technique of estimation.
