Abstract

A levels of processing procedure was used to explore whether a rehearsal set constitutes a necessary condition for the successful performance of temporal judgments as suggested by Tzeng, Lee and Wetzel (1979). This suggestion was confirmed since no temporal judgments exceeded a random guessing level following a physical structure orienting task. Though order judgments following a semantic orienting task were certainly above chance level, the pattern was less clear for position and lag judgments. The results are taken as further support against the claim that all temporal coding takes place automatically.
