Abstract

1. Intestinal loops of dogs were exposed to acid-pepsin solutions with and without bile salts at zero and 90 cm. H2O pressure, and at pH’s of approximately 1.2 and 3.7. 2. Bile salts markedly inhibited the digestive action of pepsin on intestinal mucosa at a pH of 1.25. 3. At a pH of 3.7 there was no damage to the mucosa regardless of hydrostatic pressure or the presence of bile salts.
