Abstract

SUMMARY Observations were made on six Ayrshire cows in an experiment conducted over a series of periods, each of 8 weeks’ duration. In each period half the cows were fed on a daily maintenance diet of 18 lb of hay per head throughout (high hay diet) while the other half received 18 lb of hay initially, then 6 lb per day and then 18 lb again (low hay diet). Milk samples were analysed for fat percentage, fat globule number and size, and solids-not-fat (S.N.F.) percentage. When the cows were fed the high hay diet there were no significant changes in any of the parameters measured, but the low hay diet reduced the average fat percentage significantly ( P P
