Gram-negative bacteria have two membranes, the external environment-facing outer membrane and the cytoplasm-facing inner membrane. They differ in terms of both their lipidic and protein compositions. The inner membrane contains a mixture of phospholipids and proteins with transmembrane domains that are helical in architecture (single helices and multiple, in contrast the outer membrane contains beta barrel (monomers or multimers) proteins and phospholipids in the inner leaflet and lipopolysaccharide in the outer leaflet.
