Abstract
Abstract An iterative numerical procedure is given for the solution of impact-contact problems in which a viscoelastic half-space is impacted by a rigid axisymmetric body. The region of contact is not known in advance but must be determined as a part of the solution. The iterative process is continued until the correct dynamic solution is obtained. This is determined from the equations of motion, the mixed boundary conditions, the momentum equation of the impinging body and the requirements that the contact stresses are compressive and no interpenetrations occur outside the contact region. Several comparisons between the dynamic and quasistatic solutions of some indentation problems are given, and both frictionless and adhesive contacts are treated in an impact-contact problem.
