Abstract

Abstract The dynamic compression test performed on an instrumented falling weight machine has been shown to be valuable in the assessment of tungsten and other high density penetrator alloys. It enables dynamic stress strain curves to be plotted, strain rate sensitivity to be assessed, reveals the incidence of shear instability and allows the critical strain for shear instability to be measured. The important parameters of the test are discussed and its applications described.
