Abstract

The flow and electrical birefringences, the diffusion, sedimentation and intrinsic viscosity have been studied on 7 cellulose nitrate (CN) fraction solutions where the CN contained is 10·7% N. There were clear correlations between the Maxwell and Kerr effects and the mol.wt. of the fractions. The nature of the experimental dependences indicates that the CN molecules have a lower kinetic rigidity in a mechanical than in an electrical field. The experimental results have been used to determine the equilibrial and kinetic rigidities, the optical anisotropy and the dipole moments of the monomer unit, and also its longitudinal component in axial direction.
