Abstract

A previously undescribed member of the genus Mallomonas (Chrysophyceae) has been found in several Ontario soft-water lakes. Its scale and bristle structure is reminiscent of M. acaroides; however, it has been assigned new variety status (Mallomonas acaroides var. muskokana). There are several features of scale and bristle structure that serve to separate this taxon from its closest relatives, M. acaroides var. acaroides Petty emend. Iwanoff and M. acaroides var. inermis Fott.
