Abstract

Everyone has noticed how the direction of sunset varies with the seasons. A formula for this direction is usually derived from a background of spherical trigonometry and some astronomy. It is the purpose of the following discussion to derive such a formula using only plane trigonometry, and without assuming any knowledge of astronomy.
