Abstract
The diffusion of plutonium in magnesium and magnesium alloys at temperatures of 420–500° C and times of up to 3 months has been studied by autoradiographic, metallographic and X-ray techniques. Diffusion coefficients, calculated by an empirical modification of Hall's technique, have been found to vary considerably with plutonium concentration. Differences in behaviour between magnesium-aluminium and pure magnesium or magnesium-zirconium alloys are discussed, and in particular the ability of aluminium additions to slow down plutonium penetration by formation of compounds.
