Abstract

Purpose To characterize the widespread effects of diabetes. Findings During the past decade, a 33% increase in prevalence of diabetes among all adults in the United States has been attributed to the vast increase in obesity. Each year, almost 200,000 people die of diabetes in the United States. Parallel to the increased toll on health and life, diabetes-related monetary costs have escalated to more than $100 billion annually. Conclusion Because major studies have shown a reduction in complications of diabetes with aggressive glycemic control, comprehensive standards for management of the disease should be developed, disseminated, and implemented.
