Abstract

The respective mandates initially given to the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) and the Conference on Disarmament (CD) leave a possible gap in the discussion of space matters internationally, especially since the discussion and deliberation of space matters internationally has evolved since the establishment of the forums. The purpose of this chapter is to focus on this development. In particular, it focuses on the evolution of the mandates of the two forums from their respective establishment until the present and the relations and collaboration between the forums. To frame the evolution of the discussion of space matters internationally, this chapter first gives a basic historical background overview. This overview is not meant to be exhaustive and all-encompassing but is intended to give a better frame of reference for the analysis that will follow.
