Abstract

We have investigated the development of Schlemm's canal using human eyes. We have also examined whether the endothelium of Schlemm's canal hasWeibel-Palade bodies and blood coagulation factor VIII-related antigen in human and monkey eyes. The deep scleral vessels first grew towards the trabecular meshwork and then changed direction to grow circumferentially. This fact suggests that there may be interactions between the scleral vessels and the trabecular meshwork for the circumferential growth of Schlemm's canal. BothWeibel-Palade bodies and factor-VIII antigen were detected in the endothelium of Schlemm's canal. These results indicate that Schlemm's canal is derived from blood vessels. It is also suggested that the damaged endothelium of Schlemm's canal may be repaired in the same way as the endothelium of blood vessels.
