The development of ICF Core Sets for Multiple Sclerosis

Abstract

Functional impairments, activity limitations and restrictions in participation are consequences of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) that occupational therapists, among other health professionals, focus on. Unfortunately, the field lacks a widely agreed-upon tool for capturing this complex construct. With the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), we can now rely on a globally-agreed-upon framework and system for classifying the typical spectrum of problems in functioning of individuals. ICF Core Sets are lists of ICF categories selected to capture those aspects of functioning most likely to be affected by specific diseases. ICF Core Sets for MS are in the process of development. The ICF Core Sets for MS will be defined at an ICF Core Sets Consensus Conference, which will integrate evidence from four preparatory studies. The ICF Core Sets for MS are being designed with the goal of providing useful interdisciplinary standards for research, clinical practice and education.
