Abstract

Certain compounds exert specific effects on various properties of steels. It is therefore of interest to know the concentrations of these compounds to correlate composition with heat treatments and properties. Differential thermal analysis and effluent gas analysis can be used to characterize and to determine quantitatively certain metal carbides and nitrides that can be isolated from the steel matrix. Such techniques have been used for the determination of M 23C 6 type carbide in certain stainless steels and for the determination of TiC, TiN, TiC xN y in 18% Ni, 8% Co maraging steels.
