Abstract

AbstractHydrophilic lipophilic balance (HLB) values provide a measure of the surface activity of organic molecules, and thus may be helpful in the screening of potential metal extractants. Data are presented which correlate the water solubility and rate of copper extraction with the HLB values for a series of hydroxyoximes. The results show a decreasing water solubility and rate of copper extraction as the HLB value decreases, that is, as the reagent becomes more lipophilic. As an estimate of the HLB value can be made from the molecular structure it is possible that some predictions can be made of extraction behaviour.
