Abstract

The focus of this paper is on the integration of immigrants andethnic minorities, with special emphasis being placed on the descendants of Angolans and Luso-Angolans that live in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Throughout the paper, we seek to identify the factors that influence the integration of the descendants of immigrants and to assess the degree of success of these individuals in their process of integration in the Portuguese society. Its first section is a brief theoretical discussion of the issue of the integration of immigrants and ethnic minorities. In the rest of the paper, an assessment is made of the degree of success of these individuals in their process of integration, by way of indicators such as their area of residence, school performance, professional status and the “identity/culture of opposition” binomial. Individual exceptions notwithstanding, our findings corroborate the existence of severe, widespread difficulties in the integration process of these individuals.
