Abstract

A new method for calculating the approximations of stress intensity factors (SIF) in linear elastic fracture mechanics is presented. The method uses a least-squares approximation and is based on path independent integrals. The objective of the method is to overcome dependence between the SIF and contour choice and to use the contours near the crack tip without a loss of accuracy. In order to avoid the mode separation difficulty in mixed mode loading when the J-integral is used, we have based our procedure on the contour integral system. Numerical results are given to demonstrate the efficiency of this new approach to path independent integrals.
