Abstract

This paper explores the meaning and application of the term sustainable development. As Jonathon Porrit points out this is one of those protean concepts that mean a hundred different things to a hundred different people. (Porrit 1998) A case study of a business centre for small and medium sized businesses developed by a community organisation is used to illustrate alternative ways in which sustainability may be interpreted and to discuss the types of difficulty that were experienced in implementing a project which met the objectives of sustainable development. The aim of the scheme was to promote sustainable development involving: economic sustainability, social sustainability, environmental sustainability.
