Abstract

Abstract A questionnaire was mailed to members of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) to identify practitioner perceptions regarding graduate tax courses needed to prepare an individual to perform simple or complex tax engagements within the first two years of their careers as professionals. Their preferences for tax courses were compared to tax courses currently offered by accredited programs. The AICPA members generally agree with the importance of tax courses most commonly offered by accredited programs. However, they perceive a more comprehensive tax curriculum as important for the preparation of individuals to perform tax engagements early in their professional careers. While the AICPA members strongly preferred graduate tax courses at a college or a university over other methods for advancing a tax professional's education, they indicated several factors in addition to course offerings which might influence their decision in choosing a graduate tax program.
