Abstract

IR spectroscopy, small and wide angle X-ray diffraction were used on polyethylene during stretching to study the conformational transitions and their correlations with the deformations of the large lattice period and of the intra-fibrillar amorphous zones. The transitions were found entirely in the amorphous zones of PE; they are directional, i.e. the coiled gauche isomers change to the stretched trans isomers. The deformations of the amorphoys layers have a rotation-isomeric mechanism. The definition of an elementary act of deformation is introduced for PE, namely a G− T transition.
