Abstract

On September 17, 1894 (the twentieth year of Kuang-hsü, the year Chia-wu, eighth month, eighteenth day), a great sea battle between China and Japan occurred in the Yellow Sea; it was the first large-scale combat between modernized navies of the world. Its outcome decided the relative national power of China and Japan and influenced the maintenance of order and security in the world for the next sixty years. Because of this war, China's accumulated weakness was revealed, as was Japan's wild ambition; and the Russian imperialists' aggression toward China and East Asia intensified. These several factors caused the international scene in East Asia and world history to enter a new stage.
