Art objects might be described as symbolic objects that aim at stimulating emotions. They reach us through our senses (visual, auditory, tactile, or other). They are displayed by means of physical material (stone, paper, wood, etc.) and combine some patterns to produce an aesthetic composition. They convey some message, normally to suggest some state of mind or to induce an emotion and the consequent feeling on the side of the viewer. Digital art differs from conventional art pieces by the use of computers and computer-based artifacts that manipulate digitally coded information, inheriting the almost unlimited possibilities in interaction, virtualization and manipulation of information the computer medium offers. In this chapter the authors propose to analyze and discuss the concepts and definitions behind digital art, emphasizing how the computer medium is itself the tool and the raw material in its creation, especially if we stress the fact that the conception and design of artistic information content is at the heart of any artistic work. Furthermore the authors present a framework for digital art creation that consists of a common design space where digital artists can smoothly progress from the concept until the final artifact while exploring the computer medium to its maximum potential.

  • O S Kulakova

Digital art is the result of creative activity practiced in the virtual space. There is no unified concept of digital art in Russia, and there is no legislative consolidation of this term. In this regard, attempts to find an answer to what digital art is and what rights its acquirer has are topical issues of Russian legal science. At the same time, under the influence of technology, as a result of the development of the blockchain, new ways of handling digital art objects have appeared. The appearance of non-fungible tokens (NFT) causes a lot of legal problems. The study of these problems is the most important task for modern lawyers. The purpose of the study is to identify the legal qualification of digital art objects. In this regard, the author sets the task to study the structure of NFT as an object of civil law. The purpose of the article is also to identify potential risks for intellectual property rights holders when issuing NFT.The methodology of this research is based on the use of a set of general scientific methods and specific methods of analysis used in legal science: system-structural method, system-functional, induction and deduction, analogy, method of formal logic and system approach. In particular, the dialectical method provides an opportunity to systematically explore the unity of social content and legal form of art objects in the digital space. The formal legal method makes it possible to form legal categories by highlighting the main features of phenomena related to research questions. The author has made assumptions about the legal nature of digital art and NFT, as well as their place in the system of intellectual property law. The author has come to the conclusion that crypto art is one of the types of digital art. A specific feature of cryptographic art objects is that their emergence and existence is possible only in blockchain. As a result of the conducted research, it has been revealed that not all NFTs connected to art objects are crypto-art objects in digital commerce.

With the development of the times, figurative expressions no longer meet the creative needs of artists and the aesthetic demands of the people. In order to express art in a more profound way, the perfect use of abstract graphics plays a crucial role in the success of the work. In recent years, there has been a surge in the creation of digital art, but there is relatively little theoretical literature on the combination of abstract graphics as a visual language and digital art. In addition, research on the theoretical aspects of digital art design is also relatively weak, so it is essential to analyse the formal aesthetics and innovative applications. In fact, digital art design has a very important role to play in promoting the development of creative cultural industries. In other words, the healthy development of digital art design can influence the future prospects of a country’s creative and cultural industries. Digital art design is an integrated and complex production process and labour outcome. In addition to its human, aesthetic, and social value, digital art also has an economic value. Digital art is a new art form that combines digital technology and artistic aesthetics. As such, digital art is characterised by high technology, diverse forms, popularised art, and the advantages of high communication, interactivity, and influence, which can provide more assistance for the innovation and application of abstract graphics. Digital art is multifaceted and has an artistic expression that cannot be matched by other forms of technology. Abstract graphics, driven by digital art, are full of novelty and interest and can greatly enrich people’s emotions and senses. Abstract graphics bring the experience of digital art to its fullest potential. The combination of digital art and abstract graphics offers more innovation and possibilities for the development of art and will bring great prosperity to art communication. With the widespread use of computer and network technology, the Internet has developed rapidly. In this context, digital art, as art created in a digital way and concept, has gained widespread attention. As a result, how to integrate existing computer resources in the new environment to build a model of digital art design effectiveness will cause a direct influence on the quality of digital art design with digital content innovation as the core. At the same time, as digital art becomes more and more popular, the demand for digital talents becomes very urgent. As a result, the cultivation of high-quality digital talents has become a major concern for society. Therefore, in order to explore the success of digital art design and the cultivation of digital art talents, and to better serve the innovation of digital art, this paper proposes a digital art effectiveness model based on the K-medoids algorithm. This model can provide a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of digital art and abstract graphics and provide theoretical support for professional design creation.

  • Adérito Fernandes Marcos

Digital artifacts or "artistic applications" as they are usually called, aim at displaying information content by materializing concepts in a digital format. In this article the author explains about the concepts and definitions behind digital art and the technological issues related to artistic and cultural heritage applications. Artistic creation begins with a concept or an abstract idea, which is gradually modeled into a form of tangible or intangible digital content that can be both the means and the end product. Digital artists consider computer technology as a way to enhance creativity and as a final artifact. The dual manifestation of artistic and cultural heritage applications results in workflow that differs for each application class. Application constraints identification is one of the most important but often undervalued issues in digital art creation. Displacement is an interactive installation applying augmented reality technology.

25 Years of Curating Digital Art: 1993–2018

  • Bruce Wands

As digital art merges with contemporary art, there have been many fundamental changes in the creative process. New forms of art continue to emerge and a revolutionary change in the art experience is occurring in museums, galleries and on the Internet. As a digital art curator, I have been fortunate to be a part of this revolution and will share my experiences and thoughts about past, present and future developments in curating traditional, contemporary and digital art. After a few landmark exhibitions in the late 1960s, digital art found an early home in international organisations, such as Ars Electronica, ISEA, New York Digital Salon, and ZKM. The development of the World Wide Web in the mid-1990s gave digital art the additional exposure it needed. Artists could now sidestep the traditional art establishment and reach a global audience through their websites. The Internet also expanded the art experience beyond galleries and museums into homes, schools and portable devices. 2001 joined 1968 as a landmark year for major museum exposure of digital art with BitStreams and Data Dynamics at the Whitney Museum of American Art and 010101 at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. What transpired over these decades has reshaped contemporary art and presented new challenges to museum professionals faced with this new art form. When looking towards the future, we will see a continued merging of digital art with contemporary art. New ways of exhibiting and creative self-expression using VR and Augmented Reality, along with other new, yet to be invented, technologies will be developed as they continue to infuse our daily lives and art experiences. This paper will examine the evolution of curating digital art over the past twenty-five years.

Digital Science Art as an Ontological Metaphor
  • Jul 15, 2021
  • Russian Journal of Philosophical Sciences
  • Andrey V Kolesnikov + 1 more

The article considers the possibility of using digital scientific art as a tool for philosophical and aesthetic cognition. On the example of games of cellular automata and from the point of view of the paradigm of synergetics, a large-scale analogy of the dynamics of multi-element distributed systems of various natures is revealed. The question is raised about the nature of beauty, which is interpreted as a fundamental cosmic phenomenon. The concept of protoconstruct is viewed as a mental (mathematical, digital) object, the properties of which are transferred to the objects and phenomena under study. As an example of digital protoconstructs, the article discusses the so-called cellular symmetroids. Cellular symmetroids can be considered from the point of view of scientific art as art objects. At the same time, they represent a deep ontological metaphor. A unique property of cellular symmetroids is spontaneous destruction and transition to quasi-chaotic dynamics. This feature can be linked to the idea of historical time, which is very unusual for mathematical objects. Mathematical structures that arise as a result of calculations according to this model are completely unique and inimitable, like the internal states of the soul or psyche of a thinking subject. At the same time, they are to the same extent determined (even involuntary) by the previous state. Integrity, internal unity are inherent not only in symmetric structures but also in the chaos that is born after them, which, in contrast to stereotypical statistical intuitive ideas, is deterministic. However, such an abstract digital art, based on the unconventional mathematics of dynamic chaos, is an accurate ontological metaphor, a visualization of the eidos of the beauty in their relationship with the cosmic logos and the nature of the original creative chaos.

Non-fungible Tokens: Value for Digital Arts and Pricing Factors
  • Jan 1, 2023
  • Vladislav Rutskiy + 7 more

The paper examines the pricing factors for non-fungible tokens (NFT) as a new class of blockchain-based cryptocurrency assets originally associated with unique digital art. One of the key challenges of the digital art industry is the problem of monetization and popularization of digital art objects. NFT can be a solution to the problem of financing digital art and at the same time a mechanism for realizing specific rights of a wide audience of token collectors. The authors of the paper carry out econometric modelling of the pricing factors of NFT art objects on the example of the electronic avatars collection “Unicly CryptoPunks”, the “wrapped” (tokenized) version of “CryptoPunks” which is one of the first and the most popular NFT art collections with the highest monetization. The results of the analysis show that the dynamics of the collection's quotes is only partially related to the market factors of the cryptocurrency industry. The collection’s historical quotes and the factors behind the development of the NFT industry are found to be more important. Thus, crypto market actors may appreciate the added value of NFT associated with digital art. The results of the study show the possibilities of NFT art to manage the risks of investors in cryptocurrency assets and to monetize digital art with the help of NFT. #COMESYSO1120.KeywordsDigital artCreative industriesBlockchainCryptocurrencyNon-fungible tokensNFTCryptoPunksUnicly CryptoPunks

Creativity in Digital Fine Art
  • Nov 1, 2014
  • John Haworth

The chapter draws on the writings of Merleau-Ponty constituting an Embodiment Theory of Art, which he uses to support his embodiment theory of perception (Haworth JT, The embodiment theory of pre-reflexive thought and creativity. In: Gilhooly KJ, Keane MTG, Logie RH, Erdos G (eds) Lines of thinking, vol 2. Wiley, Chichester, 1990, Leonardo 30(2):137–145, 1997). This views the artwork as “enriched being” in its own right, as distinct from an analogue for an external truth or essence, as traditional aesthetic theory claims. It proposes that this enriched being is not produced primarily by intentional acts, the traditional view, but by the reciprocal influence of consciousness, the body, techniques and materials. It “gives visible existence to what profane vision believes to be invisible” (Merleau-Ponty M, Eye and mind. In: Eddie JM (ed) The primacy of perception. North Western University Press, Evanston, p 166, 1964a). Merleau-Ponty (Eye and mind. In: Eddie JM (ed) The primacy of perception. North Western University Press, Evanston, 1964a) drew on the writings of modern artists and concluded that the painter’s vision is not a view on the outside, but a concentration or coming to itself of the visible (p. 181). He considered that works of art contain matrices of ideas that have their origins in embodiment (Merleau-Pony M, Indirect language and the voices of silence. In Wild J (ed) Signs. North Western University Press, Evanston, p 77, 1964b). He also claimed “that modes of thought correspond to technical methods, and that to use Goethe’s phrase ‘what is inside is also outside’” (Sense and Nonsense 1964c, p 59). As Merleau-Ponty indicates, we do not see the world, but see with the world. In artistic terms different media with which we interact have different voices which play a part in the creation of enriched being, perception and consciousness. The chapter will present conclusions from research conversations undertaken by Haworth (Leonardo 30(2):137–145, 1997) using the perspectives of Merleau-Ponty, held with internationally famous artists in order to gain further insights into the creative process. The chapter will summarise and discuss findings from practice led research by the author, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Board in the UK, into Creativity and Embodied Mind in Digital Fine Art; and Freedom and Constraints in the Creative Process (Haworth JT, Explorations in creativity, technology and embodied mind. In: Freire T (ed) Understanding positive life: research and practice on positive psychology. Escolar Editora, Lisboa, pp 429–444, 2010a). Several examples of recent work in digital fine art by the author will be presented and discussed, focusing on the creative process. Comments will be noted from an international study of digital artists (Thompson P, Born digital-new materialities. Robert Gordon University, Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen, 2011). The chapter will summarise and discuss an innovative photoethnographic project by the author into ‘The Way We Are Now’, and ‘A day in the life of----’. The possibilities of interpretation of this visual methodology are considered to be “an artistic object for contemplation; as individual visual profiles for comparative research; or as analysis of themes across a group of individuals, and between groups” (Haworth JT, Explorations in creativity, technology and embodied mind. In: Freire T (ed) Understanding positive life: research and practice on positive psychology. Escolar Editora, Lisboa, pp 429–444, 2010a). The ESM method with photos can also stimulate reflection and change in perceptions. The method can break the mould of looking/ perceiving. It can open up opportunities/possibilities for new ways of seeing things, and introduce a new train of imagination. The method could be used to create a global mirror of consciousness. The chapter will conclude by discussing future directions for research and practice.

Image of Women’s Body as Inspiration in Creating Mix Media Painting. Body image is a person's perception that is influenced by the mentality of one's observations and judgments about oneself in terms of appearance, ability, and personality. Perception of body shape, body weight, height, hair type, skin color, way of speaking, way of socializing, and how one wants to be the ideal type of society. This creation aims to describe positive body image concepts and ideas in the form of digital and conventional art as well as to voice how important positive body image is for a person, specifically a woman. This creation has several stages, including: 1) Exploration stage (collecting data from various sources). This data then becomes the inspiration and message content in this conventional and digital art work. This digital concept was chosen to match the theme of body image, 2) The improvisation stage (designing an image) determines the visual form to have a design style according to existing concepts such as a female object, several additional supporting objects and the creative tools. 3) The visualization stage (crafting process) choosing colorful colors in accordance with the style of a cheerful woman, and being able to convey the message contained well by the community. The results of the process of creating this art are 7 pieces of paintings using canvas media and a mix of conventional media. Presenting a painting exhibition that is packaged neatly and nicely, and presents a visual concept of women's beauty standards that are in accordance with the author's goal, namely to voice arguments about the importance of body image for women. Keywords: Body image; digital art; self acceptance
