Abstract

Kunqu is the oldest and very infl uential genre of musical drama in China, fully displaying is national characteristics. Kunqu combines poetry, prose, drama, literature, vocals, dance, acrobatics and fi ne arts. It is fi lled with deep cultural content, becoming a signifi cant symbol of traditional Chinese culture. The development of Kunqu has now led to the formation of modern genre type, which has absorbed the specifi cs of today’s era. This article compares the traditional and modern opera and provides an overview of the historical development of this genre.
