Abstract

An off-campus housing party led to serious violence, leaving a first year student lying in a snow bank in subfreezing weather, severely beaten, unconscious, clinging for his life. This act of violence challenged one college campus to question its own character. In response, the campus came together to create the “Cobleskill Creed,” a set of values statements which serve as the institution’s guiding principles for character development. This paper will discuss the issue of violence and character development, explore this significant incident and its aftermath and document the intentional work of the State University College of New York at Cobleskill community to develop the Cobleskill Creed and integrate it into the fabric of the institution.
