Abstract

Philaenus spumarius is an insect of wide geographical distribution which has a number of colour morphs. This is a report of an attempt to provide an objective classification of the morphs by direct measurement of some visual characteristics. Distribution of these within the sample did not follow a normal curve but it was not possible to correlate the observed distribution with the subjectively sorted groups. This throws some doubt on the validity of the traditional subjective classification and on deductions based on this.
