Abstract

Many cities have implemented industrial transformation whereas there is a lack of reasonable evaluation of its effect. From the perspective of ecological efficiency, the effect of industrial transformation was evaluated by choosing Dongguan as the case. The new measurement model framework for urban ecological efficiency was first established, when integrating three dimensions of resource, environment, and economy. Subsequently, the assessment indicators of urban ecological efficiency were selected to measure the performance of the three dimensions. And the concrete calculation of urban ecological efficiency was complemented based on the principle component analysis. The results show that the urban ecological efficiency in Dongguan City roughly increased during 1978–2014. And the whole study period can be divided into five stages, during which the relative performance of the three dimensions and the characteristics of industrial development showed different features. It is concluded that the ecological efficiency increased with the promotion of industrial transformation in Dongguan City, which indicates the success of the industrial transformation in certain extent and encourages the further promotion of industrial transformation and upgradation.
