Abstract

The publicly funded Medicare system in Australia has been recognised as a leading universal health-care model. However, its equitability has been under increased scrutiny. The COVID-19 pandemic has widened care disparities between socioeconomic groups. In particular, patients with cancer are facing unprecedented challenges in accessing income support. The Australian Disability Support Pension (DSP) aims to provide financial assistance to those with a permanent medical condition. However, the majority of Australians with cancer do not meet its eligibility requirements, leaving them with financial and psychological distress while confronting a life-changing diagnosis.
