Abstract

By the use of classical electrodynamics, it is shown that the excess pressure due to the dielectrophoretic forces exerted by an electric field on a dielectric liquid can be expressed in terms of the mass density of the liquid in the absence of the field. The result is applicable to linear and isotropic dielectrics in stationary (or quasi-stationary) fields.
