Abstract

AbstractThe oxidation of thioglycollic acid (TGA) by bromate is an autocatalytic reaction which is further catalysed by the presence of soluble ferric iron. The reaction rate decreases at increasing pH but, in the presence of ferric iron, there is an optimum pH of about 9.0. When the pH is below 7.0 the reaction rate is again increased due to the liberation of free bromine.
