Abstract

In the pediatric radiology department, approximately 65 children per month are sedated in MRI with thiopental. A retrospective chart review of the first quarter of 2004 identified only a 4% failure rate with minimal to no adverse reactions (mild oxygen saturation drops or paradoxical reactions). All children 6 months to 6 years of age sedated with thiopental for MRI procedures were included in this review. A review of the literature demonstrates that thiopental is not a widely used drug for radiologic sedations; however, it is an effective medication for sedation of younger children. This session demonstrated that thiopental used rectally in children 6 months to 6 years of age is a safe and effective alternative to oral and intravenous sedation.
