Abstract

The phase transition of two-flavor quark matter into strange matter in the interior of a neutron star is studied. It is shown that the timescale of the transition is below 0.1 ωs and the s-quark semileptonic processes are of significance in neutrino emissions during the transition. Owing to these processes, the transition in a young neutron star of 1.4 M ⊙ mass will liberate more than 3×10 51 erg of energy as a neutrino burst.
