Abstract

The structure of the pheromone produced by adult male bertha armyworm, Mamestra configurata, is confirmed as phenethyl alcohol. Radioactive labelling experiments using male pharate adults have shown that the pheromone is biosynthesized from phenylalanine. The data indicate that this conversion is carried out via cinnamic acid rather than phenylpyruvic acid. This interpretation was supported by in vitro experiments with a crude enzyme preparation from homogenates of male pharate adults. A proposed pathway from phenylalanine to phenethyl alcohol is presented.
