Abstract

The binding of 14C-labelled porphyrins by plasma proteins in vitro was studied by means of equilibrium dialysis, gel filtration, paper electrophoresis and immunoelectrophoresis. Uroporphyrin I did not move with proteins in gel filtration and paper electrophoresis. This porphyrin is probably not at all or only loosely bound by plasma proteins. Uroporphyrin III, coproporphyrin I and coproporphyrin III were found in paper electrophoresis in the β-fraction and albumin, whereas the major part of protoporphyrin moved with the albumin band. The porphyrin-binding protein in β-fraction was demonstrated to be hemopexin by means of radio-immunoelectrophoresis and labelled coproporphyrin III.
