The Association of Trait Emotional Intelligence with Perceived Stress, Body Image and Quality of Life in Indian Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Cross-sectional Study.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) imposes a substantial psychological burden, with affected women experiencing an increased risk of depression and suicidal behaviour. Although the clinical features of PCOS are well documented, the influence of modifiable psychological factors such as emotional intelligence (EI) remains underexplored, particularly among Indian women. This study examined the associations between trait EI, perceived stress, body shape concern and quality of life in Indian women with PCOS. A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted at a tertiary care centre in Puducherry, India. One hundred women aged 18-35 with confirmed PCOS were recruited. Participants completed validated questionnaires: the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Short Form, Perceived Stress Scale-10, Body Shape Questionnaire-16A and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Questionnaire. Multiple linear regression models were used to identify independent correlates of psychological outcomes. A significant psychological burden was evident, with 91% of participants reporting moderate to high perceived stress. Higher trait EI was significantly associated with better psychological well-being, showing negative correlations with both perceived stress (ρ = -0.60) and body shape concern (ρ = -0.43). Multiple linear regression analysis, after controlling for covariates, confirmed that higher EI was the strongest independent correlate of lower perceived stress (β = -0.58, p < .001), reduced body shape concern (β = -0.34, p < .001) and higher overall quality of life (β = 0.51, p < .001). Additionally, moderate physical activity was independently associated with lower perceived stress (p < .001) and higher quality of life (p = .011). Trait EI emerged as a key independent correlate of lower perceived stress, reduced body shape concern and improved quality of life. Moderate physical activity also contributed independently to lower stress and better quality of life. These findings support incorporating emotion-focused interventions into comprehensive PCOS management.

Emotional Resilience and Behavioral Flexibility: The Predictive Influence of Trait Emotional Intelligence on Adaptive Performance

Background: The modern multispecaility hospital setting requires high levels of adaptable performance (AP) from nursing staff due to its rapid organizational change, extreme volatility, and complicated patient requirements. It is believed that emotional intelligence (EI) is a crucial psychological antecedent that permits behavioural flexibility under stressful situations. Methods: A cross-sectional, quantitative design was used to investigate the connection between AP and trait EI. (N=214) registered nurses employed in multispeciality hospital settings were chosen as a convenience sample. The Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Short Form (TEIQue-SF) and the multidimensional Adaptive Performance Scale (APS), which is based on Pulakos’s eight dimensions were, used to gather data. Using Hierarchical Multiple Regression (HMR), the distinctive prediction ability of EI was evaluated. Results: There was a substantial positive correlation (r = 0.45, p &lt; 0.001) between trait EI and overall AP. Trait EI was found to be a significant predictor of AP, accounting for an extra 18% of the variance (R2 = 0.18, p &lt; 0.001) above control factors (age and experience), according to HMR analysis. Handling Work Stress and Crisis Management were the AP dimensions with the strongest predictive power. Conclusion: In extremely complicated clinical roles, high trait EI is a significant predictor of adaptability. These results highlight how crucial emotional competence is to nurse’s ability to remain calm, creative, and focused in the face of erratic work environments and pressing expectations. Implications: To support professional growth, strengthen organizational resilience, and ultimately improve patient safety outcomes, health systems should incorporate EI evaluation and training.

High trait emotional intelligence in men: Beneficial for perceived stress levels but disadvantageous for the physiological response to acute stressors?

This study examined the relationship between trait emotional intelligence (EI) and stress in 110 male employees. Particularly, the association between trait EI and perceived chronic stress, occupational stress, and the physiological stress response was examined. Trait EI, perceived chronic stress, and occupational stress levels were assessed via questionnaires. The physiological stress response was measured by means of salivary free cortisol and heart rate variability (HRV) in response to the Trier Social Stress Test for Groups. Consistent with previous findings, men with high trait EI showed significantly lower perceived chronic and occupational stress levels than men with low trait EI. However, men with high trait EI also showed significantly higher cortisol reactivity than their low trait EI counterparts. Similarly, HRV in men with high trait EI appeared to be lower than in men with low trait EI but HRV differences between groups were not significant. Our findings suggest that trait EI might play a critical role in the stress regulation process but due to the cross‐sectional design of the study no causal conclusions can be drawn. Experimental studies need to explore further whether and how trait EI affects psychological and physiological stress responses.

This study examined the relationship between trait emotional intelligence (EI) and variation in psychological (positive affect: PA, negative affect: NA) and psychophysiological (salivary alpha-amylase: sAA) indicators among Japanese employees over 3 consecutive days (working day 1, non-working day, working day 2). The analyses revealed that higher trait EI was associated across the days with higher PA, but not with NA. Moreover, diurnal sAA levels were lower in the high trait EI group than in the low trait EI group on the intervening non-working day, and this difference between the EI groups continued to show a tendency to significance on working day 2. The results indicate that higher EI may be related to the preservation of higher levels of PA and lower levels of sympathetic activity in recovery in the naturalistic condition.

As part of the globalization of medical education, residency programs in Oman have adopted competency-based standards by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education International (ACGME-I). Correctly perceiving the emotions of others and managing one's own emotions are essential to high-quality patient care. We tested the reliability and construct validity of the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Short Form (TEIQue-SF), and assessed trait Emotional Intelligence (EI) in Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB) residents in multiple specialties. We explored for correlations with trainees' sociodemographic background data. We conducted a cross-sectional, observational study between February and August 2017. Participants were OMSB residents. We administered the TEIQue-SF and collected sociodemographic data from participants. Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to identify independent predictors of trait EI. The present cohort scored high in the trait EI subscale of Well-being, followed by Sociability, Self-control, and Emotionality. Among sociodemographic factors, female gender and high income were significant predictors of TEIQue-SF's Well-being subscale and high income and living in a rented home were significant predictors of the Sociability subscale. This is the first study conducted among medical residents in Oman regarding trait EI and its correlates. Our findings of overall high EI and several socioeconomic predictors echo the literature on the assessment of EI in trainees. The findings add to the evidence of cross-cultural applicability of instruments to measure trait EI, and use assessments of EI in resident selection and education.

The Role of Emotional Intelligence During an Emotionally Difficult Decision-Making Task

Emotional intelligence (EI) can be defined as the ability to understand, perceive, and manage emotions. However, there is little research investigating how EI influences decision-making during emotionally difficult situations. We hypothesized that higher EI would correlate with greater utilization of socially relevant facial cues during emotional decision-making. Sixty-two 18–45 year olds completed a decision-making task simulating an airport security screening during a credible terrorist threat. Participants viewed a series of facial photographs of potential passengers (white men and women) and selected which passengers to detain for further interrogation. The face photographs were previously rated for a set of character traits (e.g., aggression) by independent judges. Participants completed measures of trait (self-perceived) and ability (performance-based) EI and cognitive intelligence (IQ). With higher ability EI, participants were more likely to detain only individuals judged to be particularly high in negative traits (e.g., “aggression”) and especially low in positive traits (e.g., “trustworthy”), suggesting greater acuity in decision choices. These associations were driven primarily by the facilitating and understanding branches of EI (i.e., the ability to generate and use emotion to facilitate decision making, and the ability to understand factors that generate and modify emotions). No association between trait EI or IQ and detainment decisions was found. Findings suggest that individuals with higher ability EI were more likely to utilize the available but limited social information (i.e., facial features) when completing an emotional decision-making task than those with lower EI. These findings have implications for real-life situations involving similarly difficult emotional decision-making processes.

Relationship between emotional intelligence, personality, and self-perceived individual work performance: A cross-sectional study on the Swedish version of TEIQue-SF

People with high emotional intelligence (EI) understand themselves and others well, and perform well at work. Trait EI has been described as “a constellation of emotion-related self-perceptions and dispositions” (Petrides and Furnham 2006), and can be measured by the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form (TEIQue-SF). The aims were to validate the Swedish version of TEIQue-SF by (1) investigating its internal consistency; (2) exploring its relationships with “Big Six” and “Dark Triad” personality traits as well as with self-perceived individual work performance; and (3) identifying which personality traits best explain variations in Trait EI, and whether this trait can predict variations in work performance over and above personality traits. Multi-occupational employees in Sweden (N = 228; M = 34 years, SD = 12.6, range 16–71 years, 66% women) with an average work experience of 14 years (SD = 11.5) were surveyed. In line with past research, internal consistency of TEIQue-SF was good, for the global Trait EI scale score (.86), and for one of its subdimensions (Well-Being) (.81). Global trait EI scale score and its subscales correlated negatively with Neuroticism and Machiavellianism, and positively with Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Openness to Experience, and Narcissism. Sociability and Self-Control had, however, almost zero correlations with Machiavellianism. All subscales of global trait EI scale score correlated positively with Task Performance and Contextual Performance. On separate regression analyses, Big Six traits explained 48%, and Narcissism 14%, of the variation in global trait EI scale score. Trait EI accounted for a significantly larger proportion of the variation in Contextual Performance than any of the Big Six traits, and an additional 6% of the variation in Task Performance when controlling for gender, age, Neuroticism and Conscientiousness. The Swedish version of TEIQue-SF has good reliability as a global trait EI scale, reasonably theoretically and empirically grounded relationships with relevant variables for the workplace, and incremental validity over and above Big Six traits in predicting work performance in younger people with relatively high educational levels. Its reliability on the subscale level and its item functioning need to be further investigated in more heterogeneous samples.

Emotional Intelligence Buffers the Effects of Negative Emotions on Job Burnout in Nursing

The study was designed to examine whether trait emotional intelligence would moderate the impact of negative emotions at work on job burnout. A total of 188 female nurses participated in this study and completed measures of trait affectivity, emotional intelligence, anger and sadness at work, and burnout. The results revealed significant and positive relationships between both types of negative emotions and burnout above and beyond demographics and the nurses’ trait affectivity. Importantly, the study demonstrated that trait emotional intelligence buffers the effects of negative emotions on burnout. Specifically, anger- and sadness-related emotions predicted greater burnout among nurses with low trait emotional intelligence but not among nurses with high trait emotional intelligence. These results suggest that emotional intelligence training could be implemented to prevent the adverse effect of negative emotions felt at work on job burnout.

A National Study of Emotional Intelligence Among Otolaryngology Residents and Fellows Using the TEIQue-Short Form.

Little is known about emotional intelligence (EI) among otolaryngology trainees and its assessment during training. We aim to assess EI levels and identify demographic and training-related factors associated with higher EI. Cross-sectional study. Survey of otolaryngology trainees. Residents and fellows completed a national single-response survey from the Governing Council of the Section for Residents and Fellows-in-Training (November 7 to December 31, 2018). The Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Short Form provided a global EI score and subscores for well-being, self-control, emotionality, and sociability. Associations between sociodemographic and training factors with higher scores were assessed. The global EI score was high (5.2 ± 0.6). Fellows had higher global EI scores than residents (5.5 vs 5.23; P = .028). Fellows (6.33 vs 5.83; P = .024), trainees older than 35 years (6.17 vs 5.83; P = .021), and those in humanitarian efforts (P = .012) had higher well-being scores. Trainees older than 35 years had higher self-control scores (5.67 vs 5.17; P = .009). Fellows (5.88 vs 5.50; P = .002) and female trainees (5.62 vs 5.38; P = .001) had higher emotionality scores. Trainees with ≥4 publications had higher sociability scores (5.0 vs 4.83; P = .001). Global EI scores were high in this national sample of otolaryngology trainees. Seniority, age, female gender, research experience, and humanitarian involvement were associated with higher scores in specific dimensions. Future studies should evaluate how training experiences or structured educational programs can enhance the development of EI.

Influence of Demographic Characteristics on Trait Emotional Intelligence and Treatment Adherence Among Patients on Hemodialysis

IntroductionTrait emotional intelligence refers to individuals’ capability to precisely identify and interpret emotions, use emotional information to support cognitive processes, and regulate emotional states effectively. The aim of the study was to explore the influence of demographic characteristics on emotional intelligence and treatment adherence in individuals undergoing hemodialysis.MethodsIn this study, a total of 468 patients on hemodialysis completed these questionnaires: i) Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form (TEIQue-SF), ii) GR-Simplified Medication Adherence Questionnaire-Hemodialysis (GR-SMAQ-HD), and iii) A questionnaire about demographic and clinical characteristics. Spearman’s correlation coefficients were utilized to investigate the association between two continuous variables. Multiple linear regression analysis was utilized with the dependent variables, the dimensions of GR-SMAQ-HD and TEIQue-SF scale.ResultsKidney transplant candidates had high overall emotional intelligence (p=0.007), while patients who were women demonstrated low overall emotional intelligence (p=0.005). Patients with a fistula or graft demonstrated enhanced self-control (p=0.022, p=0.026, respectively) and increased well-being (p=0.024). Older age was associated with high overall treatment adherence (p<0.001), while patients living alone and those with comorbidities demonstrated low levels of overall treatment adherence (p=0.007 and p=0.049, respectively).ConclusionsEducational and psychosocial programs designed to improve emotional intelligence can be incorporated into hemodialysis care, in order to foster greater treatment adherence among patients on hemodialysis.

The Impact of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome on the Sporting Performance of Female Players

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is perhaps the most widely recognized endocrine issues in females of reproductive age, influencing up to 20% of individuals of this populace. Many recent studies indicate that testosterone, which can increase muscle mass and strength, stimulates erythropoiesis, promotes competitive behavior, and enhances sporting performance of female athletes. Methods: The comparative study was designed and conducted in which a sample of female athletes (n=40) who had been diagnosed with PCOS by a qualified gynecologist based on clinical features and lab tests. At the same time, a healthy group of female athletes (n=40) was selected from participants of the same population and having regular menses and showing no clinical features of PCOS. The main objectives of the study included: 1) to compare both the groups of female athletes on clinical features of PCOS, and 2) to compare both the groups on self-perceived sports performance. Data was collected from The University of Central Punjab, The University of Lahore, and The University of Lahore College for Women. Data collection was done using two different instruments involving “Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Questionnaire (PCOSQ)” and “Athlete’s Subjective Performance Scale (ASPS)”. Data analyses involved descriptive analysis followed by “Independent Sample t test’ to compare the physical and psychological impact of PCOS and ANOVA was applied to analyze the impact of PCOS on sports performance. Results: There were significant differences between female athletes with PCOS and those with Non-PCOS on physical and psychological conditions. Weight issues t (78) =15.104, (p= .000), Body Hair t (78) =25.108, (p= .000), Menstrual Problems t (78) =20.976, (p= .000), Helplessness t (78) =17.775, (p= .000), and Low mood t (78) =8.449, (p= .000). Significance value (p = .000), which is below 0.05 and, therefore, there is a statistically significant difference in the mean sporting performance. Conclusion: Based on the results, it can be concluded that female athletes with PCOS were more concerned about their physical and psychological conditions. Moreover, their sporting performance was statistically significantly higher than Non-PCOS athletes, which is attributed to higher energy level caused by PCOS itself. Future research must focus on measuring energy level of female athletes with PCOS and Non-PCOS.
