Abstract

Background: The St. George9s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) measures health-related quality of life (HRQL) in patients with obstructive lung diseases and has frequently been used in patients with IPF, but it is not known if it could be an appropriate tool to appreciate HRQL in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and respiratory system (RS) involvement. Objectives: To assess the appropriateness of the SGRQin patients with SLE and RS involvement. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, 106 SLE patients (aged 18-70 years) were evaluated, including 45 with established RS involvement. Pulmonary function tests (PFT), dyspnea Borg scale and disease duration were used for correlation. Results: Patients with SLE and RS involvement presented lower SGRQ scores vs patients withoutRS involvement. All domains were impaired: symptoms (39,1±26), activity (51±24), impact (25±23) and total (35±22) scores, but only the symptoms domaine differed significant (p=0,05) from patients without RS involvement. We found correlations between FVC and SGRQ domains: symptoms (r=-0,74, p Conclusion: The SGRQ could be an appropriate tool for assessing respiratory9s system involvement impact on HRQL of patients with SLE.
