Abstract
Synopsis On the basis of rate theory aformula is derived which describes creep of concrete under sealed and drying conditions. A series of exponential expressions is introduced for the time dependence of shrinkage. Small specimens of hardened cement paste were tested under sealed conditions at 90% R.H. and 53% R.H. Creep was also determined on specimens equilibrated at 90% R.H. but tested at 53% R.H. Similar experiments were carried out on hollow cylinders of hardened cement paste. The observed behaviour could be satisfactorily described with the help of the derived formula. The validity of the equation and some advantages of its application are further established by a critical comparison with suitable concrete creep data in the literature. Possible extensions and further applications of the approach are discussed.
