Abstract
The majority of workholding operations involve some degree of frictional clamping with or without indentation. Investigations into the mechanism of metallic friction during the last thirty years have established concepts of limited areas of real contact and plastic deformation of contacting asperities with shear and ploughing forces closely related to the measureable physical properties of the metals in contact. The relatively simple analytical approaches which have emerged are in the present case discussed in relation to the workholding processes involved in many metal cutting operations.
