Abstract

The sequence of the variable region of a light chain from rabbit anti-type III polysaccharide antibody of b4 allotype was determined. Comparison with other sequenced rabbit kappa chains showed striking similarity to light chains with the rare amino terminal sequence Ile-Val-Met from antibodies elicited against Streptococcal A-variant carbohydrate and the carbohydrate of Micrococcus lysodeikticus. Residues 28–33 within the first complementarity determining region (CDR) were identical in sequence to the anti-A-variant carbohydrate antibody light chains but the third CDR differed considerably. An unusual insertion of three amino acids following homology position 58 was found which has not been previously observed in rabbit kappa chains.
