Abstract
The killing substance paramecin liberated into the medium by killer paramecia has been inactivated by monochromatic ultraviolet light. The action spectrum for this inactivation parallels the absorption spectrum for aromatic amino-acid containing proteins. It is estimated that DNA would have to be present in an amount less than 1% in paramecin to give the observed action spectrum. Paramecin can be inactivated by chymotrypsin but not by DNase. The latter enzymic result contradicts those obtained by Van Wagtendonk. There is no good explanation for the discrepancy. Paramecin is an entity which has a large amount of protein (containing little cystine) and does not seem to require DNA for its activity.
