Abstract
A detailed study has been made of the 6 keV El transition in Ta 181. Delayed coincidence measurements have shown that the 6 keV γ-ray is in coincidence with the 152.5 keV γ-ray in W 181 decay. From K X-ray-6 keV γ-ray coincidence measurements the total conversion coefficient is found to be α 6 = 46±8, while the K-capture fraction is determined to be 0.63±0.05. The transition energy is measured as 6.2±0.1 keV and the branching to the 159 keV level is (7.7±2.5)×10 −4. The present measurements using the coincidence technique are in agreement with the previous electron and γ-ray spectrometer measurements and confirm the W 181 decay scheme previously suggested. The conclusion is drawn that the 6 keV transition occurs between a level at 6 keV and the ground state, and thus that the γ-ray should be suitable for Mössbauer effect experiments.
