Abstract

A 12C(d, 6Li) 8Be α-cluster pickup experiment with deuterons of 51.8 ± 0.3 MeV was performed at the Karlsruhe isochronous cyclotron to get information about the α-cluster structure of the 12C nucleus. The absolute differential cross section was measured for angles between 12° and 128° c.m.. Several 6Li groups were found in the spectra due to the residual 8Be nucleus in the ground state and the excited states. The angular distribution of the 12C(d, 6Li) differential cross section corresponding to the 8Be ground state shows a sharp diffraction structure. The cross section corresponding to the first excited state (2.9 MeV) of the 8Be residual nucleus is higher by a factor of about 5 with little structure in the distribution. In the two-cluster approximation of Phillips and Tombrello the ( 8Be(2.9 MeV) + α) parent state of the 12C nucleus seems to be dominant with respect to α-clustering.
