Abstract

Thai Food Act B.E. 2522 is the foundational law governing food production and quality safety standards, including all container standards for storing, packaging, and retaining foods. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the Ministry of Public Health is the primary agency for food and food packaging safety oversight. Three regulations controlling food packaging, called Notification of the Ministry of Public Health, are currently in place. The notifications resemble Japanese regulations of the same type and stipulate general safety requirements of finished articles. Positive lists for starting substances or additives are yet to be established. It is noteworthy that the FDA authority is limited to food containers already in contact with food but not the empty containers themselves. In addition, certain food packaging materials and containers must comply with Ministry of Industry standards, Ministry of Commerce notifications, or those of the Office of the Consumer Protection Board.
