This text comments on a drawing research project which uses dissection as a method for producing speculative architecture. The anatomical cut and the architectural section converge in an act of controlled violence upon the production of a speculative organic form. For Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and the series of dissection drawings presented here, flesh is not merely the material of the organic body; flesh is seen as both body and world, as the organic body is not external to the world but an integral part of it. By aligning the architectural section with anatomical and botanical dissections, this research positions architectural drawing as an agent of transformation rather than a mere documentation of form. In these drawings, the traditional architectural section-line is not an abstract geometrical tool but a compositional force – a method for opening up the question of form to speculation. The act of cutting produces openings during the practice of drawing and thus opportunities for various references to come together. Anatomical details intersect with botanical structures, architectural elements and mythological references, allowing the section line to simultaneously cut through matter, history and meaning. Engaging with Jacques Derrida’s notion of différance and Merleau-Ponty’s understanding of chiasm , this drawing research foregrounds the generative nature of the incision, revealing how drawing operates within a structure of overlapping ambiguity. This pursuit is a deliberate rejection of architecture’s tendency towards fixity and certainty, enabling observations through drawing and bringing to the surface the ever-shifting relationships between disciplines.

As the Korean government initiates the Han-style campaign, the efforts and expectations for the modernization and industrialization of Hanok are growing. Accordingly, a major R&D project sponsored by the government is in progress for the development of related technologies, in which the development of a Hanok design support system based on Building Information Modeling(BIM) technology is included as one of the major subjects. However, the development of design tools for Hanok so far has not focused on the windows and doors, which is another major element of Korean traditional architecture. Therefore, this study developeda BIM-based design tool for Hanok windows and doors as an approach to the integrated design of various Hanok elements and their applications to modern buildings. To this end, the characteristics of Hanok windows and doors were analyzed first in terms of the location, opening method, style, components, and the over-all construction. A design tool was then developed with the parametric modeling functions of the ArchiCAD Ⓡ system. The applicability and efficiency of the developed tool were verified with design simulations. This is expected to contribute to not only the application of Hanok windows and doors to modern buildings but also to the further development of an integrated Hanok design system.

This document is the SoS Architecture specification only, and captures the system of systems architecture design for the INTERSECT Initiative and its components. It is intended to provide a deep analysis and specification of how the INTERSECT platform will be designed, and to link the scientific needs identified across disciplines with the technical needs involved in the support, development, and evolution of a science ecosystem. PLEASE NOTE: This is a working document and reflects current discussions and design activity among the authors. There may be inconsistencies within the document as different parts evolve at a different pace. We invite comments and thoughts from the public on this and following working drafts. The first finished version of this document is scheduled for release in September 2023.

The Organizing Property of Communication

What is an organization? What are the building blocks that ultimately constitute this social form, so pervasive in our daily life? Like Augustine facing the problem of time, we all know what an organization is, but we seem unable to explain it. This book brings an original answer by mobilizing concepts traditionally reserved to linguistics, analytical philosophy, and semiotics. Based on Algirdas Julien Greimas’ semio-narrative model of action and Jacques Derrida’s concept of écriture, a reconceptualization of speech act theory is proposed in which communication is treated as an act of delegation where human and nonhuman agents are mobilized (texts, machines, employees, architectural elements, managers, etc.). Perfectly congruent with the last development of the sociology of translation developed by Michel Callon and Bruno Latour, this perspective illustrates the organizing property of communication through a process called ‘interactoriality’. Jacques Lacan used to say that the unconscious is structured like a language. This book shows that a social organization is structured like a narrative.

Levant’ta Oryantalizm: İzmir’de Oryantalist Mimarinin Kaybolan Bir Örneği Olarak Sarıkışla Subay Mahfili

Bu çalışma Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun en önemli liman kentlerinden biri olan İzmir’deki Sarıkışla binasına ek olarak inşa edilen ve Subay Mahfili olarak bilinen yapının tarihçesini araştırmayı, bu yapının kentin mimarlık tarihi açısından önemini vurgulamayı amaçlamaktadır. Yapının, kentteki önemli oryantalist mimari örneklerinden biri olması dolayısıyla çalışmada öncelikle Avrupa ve Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nda oryantalist mimarinin ortaya çıkış ve yayılımı özetlenmiş ardından İzmir’deki örneklere değinilerek söz konusu yapı bu bağlam içerisine oturtularak incelenmiştir. İnşa tarihi kesin olarak bilinmeyen Subay Mahfili yaklaşık 50 yıl kullanıldıktan sonra eki olduğu Sarıkışla Binası ile birlikte 1955’te yıkılmış, yerini bugün Konak Meydanı olarak anılan boşluğa bırakmıştır. Ancak ne Sarıkışla ne de Subay Mahfili yıkılmaları ile kentin ve kentlilerin belleklerinden silinmemiştir. 1829 yılında inşa edilen Sarıkışla Binası bezemesiz, sade karakterine rağmen konumu, boyutu ve sahne olduğu olaylar göz önüne alındığında kentin en önemli yapılarından biridir. Subay Mahfili ise Sarıkışla ile tezat oluşturacak derecede bezemeli, oryantalist üslubun özelliklerini gerek mimari elemanlar gerekse bezeme motifleri ölçeğinde taşıyan nitelikli bir yapıdır. Çalışma kapsamında ulaşılan bilgiler sonucunda söz konusu yapının inşa tarihinin büyük olasılıkla 1913-1917, kesin olarak ise 1913-1922 arasında olması gerektiği saptanmıştır. Yapının tasarımının 19. yüzyıl sonu, 20. yüzyıl başında, Subay Mahfili’nin hemen karşısında, 1901 tarihinde inşa edilen ve yine oryantalist özellikler taşıyan Saat Kulesi’nin ve Sarıkışla’nın avlusundaki fıskiyeli havuzun mimarı olan Raymond Charles Péré’ye ait olabileceğine dair bazı destekleyici argümanlar da yine çalışma içerisinde sunulmuştur.

Attachment and Associational Dimensions in the Architecture of Historical Building Conversion in Thailand Between 1997 and 2012

The research on The Initial Survey of Evolution of Adaptive Reuse of Historic Buildings in Thailand is aimed at constructing knowledge for the module named Reuse and Rehabilitation of Historic Buildings. This module is part of the curriculum of Bachelor of Architecture, which studies the role of architecture fabricated within historical buildings. In the era between 1997 and 2012 in Thailand, there was a notable transformation from conservation to contemporary conversion. A review of conservation perspectives indicates a combined multi-disciplinary cooperation between architectural design and conservation. To establish issues regarding the knowledge of conversion, a research question is raised: how do architectural elements play its role through changing of use? Aimed at understanding the complexity among conversion ideologies, issues surrounding architectural elements of historical buildings are rationally explored. Based on significant conversion projects from 1996 to 2012, architectural elements were referenced as to how concepts and objectives were associated. Qualitative research was conducted through a study of primary sources; survey and classification of representative samples, and secondary documents, records and architectural drawings. The controlling significance of the buildings led to a discussion and an analysis of the architectural designs through new additions and amendments made on the historical fabric. Included in this discussion are the principles of conversion as they relate to the architecture of historic buildings and the ideology of the modification. It is found that understanding a change to architectural elements through an ontological perspective, that of attachment and associational approaches, could clearly reveal the construction programme that felicitates the historical building for which conservation or adaptation is determined. A dialogue on relevant contexts surrounding amendments of architectural elements demonstrated that a strong emphasis towards particular objectives of use could coincidentally harm the historical building’s architectural dimension framework. This leads to the notion that architecture for adaptive reuse should include knowledge of the original construction, a balance among conditions of the existing building, its programming and further habitation.

Methods and rationale for closed treatment of Achilles tendon ruptures.

A method of closed treatment of Achilles tendon ruptures by casting, utilizing a long leg cast for 6 weeks and a short leg cast for 4 additional weeks, is presented. An experimental model using rabbits supports the clinical contention that closed approximation and immobilization of Achilles tendons allows tendon healing to progress, at least in the early stages. Observations made on the tendon sheath during early healing attribute a very positive role to it in providing needed blood supply to the tendon. The importance of maintaining a smooth gliding surface as well suggests that the tendon sheath should not be violated by surgical repair on the Achilles tendon.

"A book which is no longer discussed today": Tran Duc Thao, Jacques Derrida, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty

This article deals with Jacques Derrida's relationship with the variations of phenomenology represented by Tran Duc Thao and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. In his public thesis defense of 1980, Derrida aligns himself with Thao, a Vietnamese philosopher who used phenomenology in a critique of colonialist politics, and explicitly opposes himself to the institutionally-valorized Merleau-Ponty. While direct overlaps and typological similarities exist between Thao and Derrida, the latter is shown overall to be closer to Merleau-Ponty, suggesting Derrida deploys the image of Thao as part of a strategy of autobiographical self-representation which emphasizes his critical relationship to philosophical institutions.

Jacques Derrida is one of the major figures of twentieth-century thought, and his library--which bears the traces of decades of close reading--represents a major intellectual archive. The first phase of the project focused on annotations related to Derrida’s landmark 1967 work <i>De la grammatologie</i> (<i>Of Grammatology</i>).<b><br></b><br><b>Data collection methods</b><b><br></b>Works cited by Derrida in <i>De la grammatologie</i> were documented in a private Zotero library using a custom tagging system to indicate the location and kind of references in a particular work. That data was imported by script into a custom database, creating records for books, sections of books, and journal articles. Records were also created for references in <i>De la grammatologie</i> based on information encoded in the Zotero tags. The book and reference data was further cleaned and refined in the database after import; items with digital editions available from PUL were linked via IIIF. Interventions were documented by project researchers using a custom-built annotation solution, linked to digitized page images from PUL digital editions for this collection. The current phase of the project only includes structured data for annotation interventions and not insertions.<b><br></b><br><b>Data dictionary</b>URIs are used as unique identifiers for references, books, and annotations across all datasets, to allow linking the information.
