Abstract

The spin tensors moments 〈 T u 20 〉, 〈 T 21 〉 and 〈 T 22 〉 of deuterons emitted from the Mg(d, d)Mg elastic scattering reaction have been measured. The average deuteron energy ( E ̄ d ) at the centre of the effective target thickness was 7.0 MeV. The angular dependence of the deuteron tensor polarization has been obtained for angles between 15° and 90° (lab) in steps of 7.5°. Optical-model analyses without and with the inclusion of the Hauser-Feshbach theory have been performed. In all cases, combinations of central potential with spin-orbit interaction were found inadequate to reproduce the data. The addition of a small attractive and long-ranged tensor interaction T R resulted in a considerably improved fit. Inclusion of a T L tensor interaction was redundant.
