Abstract
ABSTRACT Temporomandibular Disorders are a prevalent group of disorders affecting the temporomandibular joints and surrounding structures. The purpose of this article is to summarize and integrate medical research regarding TMDs with research regarding the singing voice. Its intent is to provide practical information for voice teachers or other professionals who may work with singers experiencing a TMD. This article will draw from medical and voice-related literature, with the author summarizing the relationship between the TMJ function and the speaking and singing voice. Since TMDs are shown to be prevalent within the singer population, associations between TMDs and the voice will also be discussed, as well as the impact that the experience of TMDs may have on the singer. While research does not support the claim that singing causes TMDs, certain predisposing and precipitating factors in its development and progression exist commonly within the singer population. The article will conclude with a discussion of limitations within the literature and suggestions for future research.
